The Thames in London is littered with new
multi-million pound upmarket developments such as this one near Vauxhall

quite as perilous as it would appear. This is one of several

Officially
now known as the clock within Elizabeth Tower at the Palace of
Westminster, 'Big Ben' (which actually refers to the bell which strikes
the hours) as it is more commonly known, is the largest four-faced
chiming clock in the world
The London Eye is a popular tourist
attraction throughout the year and particularly so on a sunny August

The
South Bank is one of London's busiest areas and attracts many street
artists in a variety of guises. 'Mr Bean' was happy to pose for
photographs with passers-by for a small donation and appeared to be
doing a good trade
Neighbouring
Mr Bean's pitch was a group of dancers/acrobats who kept an even larger
crowd entertained. Here we see one of them standing one-legged on
his colleague's head whilst wrapping his other leg around his
neck!

The
O2 Arena is now a prestigious venue for all the big-name artists.
Inside it houses a micro-community of bars, shops and restaurants, all
of which were well patronised ahead of the sold-out Iron Maiden concert
to be held that evening

Just
arrived or about to depart? Well, the latter in a sense as,
although this Boeing 747-400 flew-in under it's own power on 20 July
2010, it will leave in thousands of pieces via lorries. The
dismantling process is already well under way (witness the large hole
under the nose cone and the absence of the 4 engines) at Cotswold
Airport, near Kemble, home of Air Salvage International, the UK's
largest aircraft recyclers. Interior stripping takes a number of
months but the whole airframe can then be reduced to a pile of scrap
metal in about two days! This particular example is the first
747-400 (introduced in 1989) to be scrapped and the largest ever
aircraft to land at Kemble

The
M5 Avonmouth Bridge was opened during 1974 and, as witnessed by the
amount of traffic seen on it today, is a vital part of one of the
country's main north - south arteries. Buildings at the port of
Avonmouth are seen in the background

Most
docks within the UK have histories dating-back for decades, if not
centuries, and usually tend to reflect a state of decline from their
former glories. Not so the Royal Portbury Docks near the mouth of
the Avon which did not open until 1978. Technically, the docks
presented something of a challenge as the area experiences one of the
greatest tidal flows in the world. For this reason the docks
themselves are impounded within lock gates. Although oil and coal
form part of the docks' regular trade, the import of motor vehicles is
the most visible with several vast compounds such as this one in
evidence

A very colourful ice cream van awaits trade in Portishead
The
town of Portishead was traditionally a fishing port but its proximity
to Bristol has resulted in the decline of that industry being negated
by commuters who work in Bristol but want to live away from the
city. The result is a smart, modern development around the former
docks with spacious public areas such as this
